NOWJOBS in the Media: Automation Helps Everyone Find Work

The Netherlands
June 20, 2025

This week, NOWJOBS Netherlands was contacted by a journalist who had heard that Dutch citizens with a foreign place of birth were being validated more slowly than other Dutch citizens. What was the reason for this? Country Manager Denise Geurtsen reassured him: NOWJOBS Netherlands is growing so rapidly that the number of sign-ups has increased significantly. So much so that, in some cases, processing profiles was delayed. These delays affected profiles that required manual validation.

In almost all cases, people are automatically validated within the app, but sometimes manual processing is necessary. This is legally required: by law, NOWJOBS must verify individuals who do not hold Dutch nationality. And that’s exactly what it does, to ensure all users receive correct contracts. However, NOWJOBS noticed that some Dutch citizens with a different country of birth ended up on the waiting list. This happened because the app was not yet able to automatically read their passports. Therefore, a manual check was necessary.

Fortunately, the backlog has been resolved, and it is now possible for all Dutch citizens to get started automatically through NOWJOBS.

Want to know more? NOWJOBS answers a few questions.

Why is place of birth important?

NOWJOBS was originally built for the Belgian market, where place of birth is required for proper payroll processing. In the Netherlands, that’s not necessary. Therefore, NOWJOBS Netherlands has decided to stop asking for place of birth. Starting mid-July, this information will also no longer be visible in the app.

In the meantime, all Dutch citizens are now automatically validated, regardless of their place of birth.

What about Belgium and France?

In Belgium, all Belgians are also automatically validated, regardless of their place of birth. In fact, both Belgian ID cards and ID cards from other EU countries are automatically validated. Manual validation is only needed in exceptional cases. For example, when a student from Peru is attending a Belgian university and wants to earn some extra income. In such a case, they must provide proof of enrollment, which the NOWJOBS scanning tool currently cannot read. These cases are manually validated. And this happens quickly: we aim to keep the threshold as low as possible. We truly treat everyone equally.

In the meantime, all workers with French nationality are also automatically validated.

How much longer does manual validation take compared to a fully automated process?

A fully automated validation takes 2 minutes. A manual check can be quick (within the hour), but during peak times, it can take longer. We’ve gained experience with sudden growth spikes and have adjusted our processes accordingly. This helps us handle these situations effectively.

What does the future hold for NOWJOBS and its flexible workers?

NOWJOBS is growing rapidly and continues to optimize its software. This allows it to handle peaks in sign-ups even better in the future. It will continue to treat all candidates equally. The more successful matches, the stronger the community of flexible workers becomes.
